I don't really have a sense of the issue with the cowl. Maybe a picture would help.
Funny CARF could have just as easily molded in the Dusz fasteners and in the right place as they did those screws.

You know those aren't screws, they are Dusz fasteners. Push in and make a half turn. They are used on panels that are removed frequently.

The patches were red doped fabric. The "hole" would be frayed where the bullet exited. But most likely in this scale you wouldn't really see the frayed edges.
You might consider masking tape...
