I don't really have a sense of the issue with the cowl. Maybe a picture would help.
Funny CARF could have just as easily molded in the Dusz fasteners and in the right place as they did those screws.

You know those aren't screws, they are Dusz fasteners. Push in and make a half turn. They are used on panels that are removed frequently.

The best way to paint the camo is using round foam tape and a spray gun. You can get the tape from auto paint stores. It's used to mask door jambs on cars. The beauty of the tape is two fold....

The patches were red doped fabric. The "hole" would be frayed where the bullet exited. But most likely in this scale you wouldn't really see the frayed edges.
You might consider masking tape...
