That would suggest that the tank was a non pressurized one ,and the tape was a just a wear shield.
Just as plausible as anything else.

The VECO clunk tank went back way before the Taurus. My dad had one in an Astro Hog.
I think the Smog Hog had one too.

One other thing, there are two holes drilled in the firewall...one is obviously larger to accomodate fuel tubing, the other is definitely smaller, (corresponding to the vent opening), where fuel...

Durring that time period there were three configurations for tanks that I can remember.
