Is it the so-called "black box" that the Germans used in the FW190 that automatically set the mixture, prop etc so that the pilot didn't have to be constantly fiddling with them?

A WAG here. Are you talking about the round windows that prevented fatigue cracking in the square window corners, such as on the Comet, which caused several of the first Comets to go down.
