Propeller blades is the answer.. Yes there are examples of a single bladed propeller, though not on a warbird that I am aware of.

US Navy used them on Wildcats long before the USAAC started to use them on their fighters. The Navy (and AAC as well) also had external fuel tanks they could attach (but not drop) on their biplane...
