And I believe that the 'Taurus' Ed is holding in the photo is the one now owned by the VR/CS. The 'NUSA' logo and the FAI stickers are a bit of a giveaway...

What is one on the left with the constant chord wing? It looks good in the video.

Looking back at the results, I guess it's F. Bosch's "original shoulder wing" although it's really a low wing.

The one on the left is Gerry Nelson I believe.

Actually it's a Cumulus - see my post 45.

Thanks Ray. I wasn't sure if the photo represented the top three competitors or not.

If they're that similar, I suspect I'd like the Sultan too.

Sorry guys. I just assumed you would all recognise the US team of Nelson, Brookes and Kazmirski with their team manager Bob Dunham.

This is Nelson's Sultan. As you can see he used it to gain a team place but I think the Cumulus is an improvement.

Trisquire - the other scan is the Fritz Bosch shoulder wing design you mentioned.

Thanks Ray. Now that I think about it, there is a picture of a Sultan in a recent issue of Model Aviation. It was in an article on either the VR/CS or the SPA.

My father didn't start subscribing to model plane magazines until the early '70s. I'm learning about the '60s after the fact.

Tom,

This is about the best Sultan picture I could find. Bit of a barge I think. Much prefer the Cumulus.
The 60s was probably the most interesting decade for pattern development - enjoy learning about it.

That's a pretty good pic RFJ - it kinda has an Orion-ish look about it.

Hi Guys, I was the second high bidder on Ed's Taurus, I'm a US guy born raised in otherside of the big pond, I was just afraid his plane would go out the country and get lost, If I win did the same as winner send to AMA museum after I pass away by my son. It was Great VR/CS person won so seller didn't have to pack plane save from accident traveling alone in the big box, could keep as is condition with No hole on the silk or dent. I grown watching this plane on magazine and flew three Reed design Taurus with OS Reed radio and Veco 45 (Dunham's Orbit was the Best I wanted but the price was at Best also), attched picture is my Proportional design Taurus built back in 60's, stab silk start ripping but still flies Great with Veco 45 and little old Futaba FM radio. We tested Orbit 10 channel Reed with Annco Servos on a Tauri flew really well, plan is to build Reed Design Taurus fly with this tested Orbit and new Bonner Transmite servos in near future. I'm also flying 1959 Nat's Class I winner Milt Boone design Charger with OS 15 built in the 60's, with my friend's custom made single channel button radio frequency on newer 40.770MHz with MK servos, this is fun flying without elevator.

Interesting, thanks for filling us in. I realize Japan is a big country but is there any possibility you know the whereabouts of Kato the designer of MK kits or Yoshioka the 1973 world champ?

Thanks, guys, for a most interesting read on Ed's Taurus. What a great outcome for a very historical model! I long maintained the Taurus was (is) one of the best R/C planes ever designed. Got to fly one a number of times in the '70's but never owned the "real deal". Wonderful memories here!

Soft landings. Joe

Nice score. It appears this plane was built from a kit and not the original Taurus, correct? Probably a back-up/spare for competition, and may account for why it has survived so nicely.

I would be very leery about donating anything to the AMA museum, as they have lost several items I gave them, one appeared on ebay 5 years later.

What happened to the original Taurus?

It matches the 1963 picture with Ed holding it?

Aileron hangings, striping and characters on the wing, they are different.

I don't know what to "make" of the "Taurus" nameplate that shows in some pictures and not on others. It's a mystery, but if you look carefully at the picture where Ed is holding the Taurus in 1963, THERE IS NO "TAURUS" NAMEPLATE. [X(] The "dash" ends just like the plane in the auction. I've also looked at the graphic above the rudder hinge, and it appears to be in exactly the same position.

As for the workshop with many airframes, Ed told me, (unless I misunderstood him), that he only built the three planes after the Orion.....the original Taurus, a taper-wing Taurus he had that I have a picture of, and the Simla. I remember being surprised at the time, thinking he had a bid "stable" of planes.

Anyway...to me they appear to be the identical plane.

I can't comment about "aileron hangings", but I can say the N-USA was definitely not there in the magazine cover, but remember this picture was taken sometime in 1962 to be on the Jan '63 cover. The 1963 Internationals were later on, and the N-USA could easily have been added later. It might even be a decal...hard to say. The plane may also be a back-up plane for the Worlds. I know you were allowed two aircraft, and they might have been finished identically. Does anyone know if Ed had two Taurus models for the Worlds?

Tom Brett had the Perigee and Apogee...in his case both were identical except for the name on the fuse. I have a photo of both planes together, along with the Nimbus. They could have both been named "Perigee", and you wouldn't have been able to tell them apart.

A couple of shots of the Taurus II as mentioned by kingaltair. First is Ed with his original taken on a trip to Japan in 1964 and second is by Les Fruh.

Hello, 8178

I have to change my opinion.
You can stop the video of the international of the competition of 1963.
I is easy to stop at the moment that the group picture is taken and look than frame by frame.(start/stop)
A moment later you see the top view of the wing, striping en characters. Also the wing is exactly the same as the wing of the Taurus of this moment.
Also the hanging of the ailerons.

I think the picture of the magazin is taken of a new one, build from a kit? Other characters, striping and less hangings

The Taurus on the January 1963 MAN cover is not from a kit, it's scratch built. The Top Flite Taurus kit did not yet exist.
