I saw an advert today for a 120 sized Gee Bee Z from Seagull. 1800mm wingspan, all up weight of 4.8kg. Anyone got one / flown one yet? Advertised price was $375 Australian dollars - about $250 US at current exchange rates.

Man I had my mind set for a world models p-47 and a skyshark p-40. THIS HAS F'd THIS ALL UP. Now I have to decide about getting this one. [:@]. I emailed them and they said $208.20 plus $87.85 to ship it to the US. I really might think of getting this one, or I just might wait until it comes to the US. That is how seagull did with the Biplane I could not find it anywhere in the US then after about a year it came here. Another website is pegasusmodels ($239.56+ $106.47). These are both in the UK

I have allready ordered this beauty yesterday from pegasus models. I plan to put there a 26cc petrol engine from hobbycity.com. I found one video on youtube with this Seagull GeeBee Z, there was just take off, no landing. I have allready a GeeBee R2 from Great Planes allso with 26cc petrol engine but havent flown it yet. I believe the Z one will be a better lender then the R2. It should symply have much better wing loading. We will see [>:]

Give Hangar-9 about three months and I'm willing to bet we'll see this Gee Bee show up here for sale. Being a Seagull ARF, It's sure to be a much better improved version versus a previous released ARF of it some years ago. Be patient, I, too, would like to have one that should be a little more stable to fly [ rather than the one that hangs up as a hangar queen in my shop with only two flights on it ] MM

Well i bought one so ill find out how it looks when i get home from work.

I am still trying to decide what motor to use
I would really like to try it electric or a nice sato 3 cylinder 4s but common sence tells me that the wing loading will be a bit high so it comes back to an OS 2 stroke nice and light but not the coolest.
I guess the best thing to do is put it all together and work out how much weight it takes to balane it and then decide on the power choice.

Hey 0257 , how's the kit quality? Is there any stringer detail on the rear of the fuselage? The pics I saw on a french site looked like the rear fuselage was smooth with no detail .

I'm anxious to see what they have for fine detail. It seems promising, they actually have the wing fairings showing right there in the photo for Sussex, that's a detail that hardly ever used to make it onto the ARF GeeBees. That alone makes it an improved representation of the full-scale.

It's not actually the size I'm looking for, I have a nice Saito 100 that I'd love to be able to use in a Z. I don't use glow motors bigger than a 100. I also have an SPE 26CC gas engine, but I kind of have a rule that I don't use any gassers on planes with less than a thousand square inches of wing, this one boasts only about 863 inches....that's a fairly good disparity in size for what I'd like to use with a gasser. I haven't figured out the wing loading with an SPE 26 with Pitts muffler on this plane, but I think it would be a bit high for my liking.

Here's a little treat for Z lovers, I'll post it up here.

I have recived and gone through my kit and would have to agree with 0257 that it is great quality for the price. Its gonna look great.
I was gonna post pics similar to 0257 but he beat me to it so thanks for your trouble
Only things i though were a bit average was the wheel pants and wing fairings are made from a type of plastic so i hope i dont crash it as it will be a bit hard to patch it up nicely as you could with fibre glass. The cowl however is fibreglass.
I saw someone asked about stringer detail on the fusalage unfortunatly there is none as it is a built up from ply and compleatly sheeted in balsa to make it smooth. it does look to be very tough though on the up side.

The only other thing i dont like is that stupid pilot face would of much ratherd a pilot from the 30s

I dont think im gonna have time to build it for a while yet so hopefully 0257 will get a chance
Im interested in that motor you have what brand is it and how heavy is it?
It looks like a good option. i think electric is just too expensive an of course flying time will be short.

The cowl is about 260 mm dia and about max 150 deep depending on how far out you mount it.

The 26cc weights about 1100g with muffler and ignition, the 40cc "Dry Weight: 1300g (2.87 lbs.)". I dont know what do they mean. I have already asked the vendor and waiting for the reply. I found in example of some other engine "dry weight" was a weight with muffler and without ignition. If that would be the case too 40cc would be about 300g havier than the 26cc and lets say 400g havier then a 1.20 glow engine.
I guess with the 40cc engine I would get about 100g/dm2. That could work, what do you think? Unlimited vertical would be no problem then

That was a real temptation. I couldnt wait any more. I just bought the CRRC Pro GF40i 40CC Gas Engine kit. I found an exact weight at [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=1074]this review[/link]. 43.9 oz. (1244g) for the engine, 2.9 (82g) for the mount and 4.1 (116g) for the ignition module. All together is 1442g.
What do you think guys? Is that real or insane? Thrust will be around 15lbs (6800g), total weight around 12.2lbs (5500g), wing loading will be than 99g/dm2.
What is your opinion?

Wow 0257 thats a f@#%ing big donk i do like your style. I just orderd a 26 cc the details as follows
$307 australian on ebay delivered. the bloke that sells them reckons he has one on a plane that wieghs 4.4kgs and can hover around half throttle. but thats what he said, its still to be proven.
So for that price i thought itwas worth a shot.
just one thing ive noticed with gee bees when you take off dont actualy pull back untill the motor is at constant rpm othewise you can get some crazy torque rolls that makes it seem like you have the ailerons back to front.

I have one in my personal plane which is an Edge 540. Weighs 4.4Kg and it pulls it around with authority. 3D is awesome. Hovers at half throttle with excellent pullout.

Unlike rear induction engines, the side induction means you don't have to move the firewall back to clear the carb, which can be a major job on most models.

These engines will fit all the current 1.20/26cc models being offered on ebay and your local hobby shops. Forget the methanol burners, glow plugs, slimy oil on your model. Convert to cheap powerful petrol engines

Gee bee ace, your engine 26cc is definitely a right choice. If you really get a wing loading close to 90g/dm you should lend with no problem with an airplane of 180cm of wingspan. Static thrust could be 1:1 to the weight of the aircraft.
What batteries are you going to use? Rx and ignition system?

To keep my gee bee powerfull and as light as possible I decided to use one battery system for both RX and ignition at the same time. I will use TURNIGY 8-15A UBEC for Lipoly (34g) and Li-po ZIPPY 2100mAh 2S3P Receiver Pack (94g) both from Hobbycity.com.
It will give me battery light indicator, safe electronic switch, enough power for servos and ignition. All together weights 128g.

I sent Horizon Hobbies an e-mail the other day requesting they carry the plane. Got a response from a lady that works there and she said she would forward it along to the marketing department. Maybe if more people e-mailed them with the same request, they would hurry along the process of putting it into their line of kits.
